Stephen Sondheim Tribute and Display

Stop by the Main Library to see our tribute to the late great Stephen Sondheim, who passed this weekend at the age of 91.
Sondheim composed and wrote the lyrics for some of Broadway’s most prolific shows including West Side Story, Company, Follies, Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods.
During his career he won an Oscar, 8 Grammy Awards, and 8 Tony Awards. He received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

Toys for Tots!

Great news! The Main Library is a toy drop site for the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign.
If you would like to contribute, please bring your new (unopened and unwrapped) toys to the marked bins at the Main Library. We have two bins: one at the Children’s Room entrance & one close to the elevator on the 1st floor.
Visit GCPL’s Facebook Page to see a special video about Toys for Tots and get more campaign information by visiting www.toysfortots.org 🤍

Blast From the Past: Mount Holly Branch Grand Re-Opening, June 1989

Video of the Mount Holly Library from June of 1989, transferred from VHS, is now available on the Gaston County Public Library Digital History Collection.

Some of the sights you will see from over 30 years ago include Librarian Brenda Weaver and Library Assistants Linda Kelly and Frances Bowden announcing the library is open with sign and balloons; local patrons visiting the newly remodeled interior; PC the Patrol Car and McGruff the Crime Dog visiting children in the parking lot; and Rockin' Reader greeting children at the Summer Reading program.

Following a $270,000 renovation started in November1988, the Mount Holly Library finally reopened to the public in June of 1989. The Gastonia Gazette reported that the previous “old brick building used to sink down, causing its patrons to have to descend 11 steps or a steep ramp to enter.” The parking lot was leveled off and restrooms were moved for handicapped accessibility. (The Gastonia Gazette, July 7, 1989, p. 1B; The Gastonia Gazette, August 6, 1989, p. B1)

Thank you to Chelse Harris, Branch Library Supervisor, Mount Holly Library, for making this audiovisual material available for the Local History and Genealogy staff to digitize for Biblioboard.

Brian Brown, Librarian, Local History & Genealogy
