Some of the sights you will see from over 30 years ago include Librarian Brenda Weaver and Library Assistants Linda Kelly and Frances Bowden announcing the library is open with sign and balloons; local patrons visiting the newly remodeled interior; PC the Patrol Car and McGruff the Crime Dog visiting children in the parking lot; and Rockin' Reader greeting children at the Summer Reading program.
Following a $270,000 renovation started in November1988, the Mount Holly Library finally reopened to the public in June of 1989. The Gastonia Gazette reported that the previous “old brick building used to sink down, causing its patrons to have to descend 11 steps or a steep ramp to enter.” The parking lot was leveled off and restrooms were moved for handicapped accessibility. (The Gastonia Gazette, July 7, 1989, p. 1B; The Gastonia Gazette, August 6, 1989, p. B1)
Thank you to Chelse Harris, Branch Library Supervisor, Mount Holly Library, for making this audiovisual material available for the Local History and Genealogy staff to digitize for Biblioboard.
Brian Brown, Librarian, Local History & Genealogy
