Engaging with Art Post-Pandemic Program

Maddie Moore poses beside a display of some of Gastonia illustrator Ralph Ray Jr.'s illustrations in the Local History and Genealogy section at the Main library.  She created this display as a part of her internship.

Join us at the library for an afternoon of art and history exploration through Biblioboard, our digital collections platform.  This program will be presented by Maddie Moore in the Carol K. Reinhardt Auditorium at the Main Library on 1555 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia, NC on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 4:00 pm.

Maddie will talk about the library's D. E. McConnell Art Collection, art by Gastonia illustrator Ralph Ray, Jr., and the James Arthur Adams scrapbook.  Adams was an African-American Boy Scouts of America leader.

Maddie attended UNC-Chapel Hill where she double majored in History and Communication Studies. She graduated and received her Bachelor's in 2019. Currently she is a Library Assistant at the Gaston County Public Library and just received her Master of Library Science degree from Appalachian State University this summer. She has also been working at the library and the Gaston County Museum as an intern for the "Engaging with Art Post-Pandemic" project.

The Gaston County Public Library received an American Rescue Plan Humanities Support Grant from North Carolina Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), for a yearlong project called “Engaging with Art Post-Pandemic”. This collaborative project between the library and the Gaston County Museum enabled the two departments to bring art and culturally important works found in department collections to a digital platform, increasing discoverability and accessibility to Gaston County resources.

This grant funding was made possible via the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the federal American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the coronavirus.
